Hypnopompa Beer Review

This stylish bottle holds a delicious secret

Brewery: Omnipollo
Style: American Imperial Stout
ABV: 11%       IBU: N/A

While enjoying a delicious dinner at Mugshot Tavern, one of our many local options, I noticed an interesting name at the bottom of the bottles list:

omni pollo hypno pompa

At $15 for a 330mL bottle of 11% imperial stout, we decided to share it and our expectations were understandably high.

And not disappointed.

The one caveat I will add to is that we should have ordered it earlier in the evening so it could sit and warm up a bit. In the end we spent awhile sitting with the brandy snifters between our palms waiting for the beer to  reach the right temperature. It was certainly worth the wait.

Nigerian Prince Beer Review

Nigerian Prince_Indie Alehouse

A heady brew that pours black as night

Brewery: Indie Alehouse
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 10%        IBU: N/A

Filling up our 2015 Growler Club growler for the first time in a few weeks, I had a tough choice: A new saison, a new ESB, and a rich, strong imperial stout.

With a fridge full of Canuck and Pompous Ass, I decided the stout would round out our options best and spent the extra $9 for this over-proof, barrel-aged brew.

I think I made the right choice – this stout was a great pairing with our delicious Indian dinner – but I’ll certainly have to be back again soon to try out the other new options available.

Winey Bastard Beer Review

Winey Bastard is a fantastic strong beer for wine lovers

Winey Bastard is a fantastic strong beer for wine lovers

Brewery:  Nickel Brook Brewing
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 9.5%       IBU: 70

Initially I was unsure of this particular imperial stout: The Pinot Noir barrels promised a rather different finish than the Kentucky Bastard’s beautiful bourbon aromas and flavours but the idea intrigued me.

While I do enjoy my occasional glass of red wine, my relationship with the stuff if not always a good one and I tend to reach for a beer over a wine most days. That said, I really like the basis for both of these barrel-aged brews, Nickel Brook’s Bolshevik Bastard, and so I figured it would be worth the experiment to find out just how different the two brews really are. Good thing as this tart imperial stout is highly delicious!

Brewery: Liberty Village Brewing Co.
Style: Stout
ABV: 7.4%        IBU: 53

Last night we went out to Tallboys for a friend’s birthday and enjoyed their fantastic selection of local craft brews. It has been a long time since we headed over there and I was quite impressed with the great selection as always.

My favourite find of the evening was this delicious little gem: a chocolate stout from a brewery I have otherwise had a hard time tracking down.

Winter Beard | 24 Days of Beer #24

Day 24 - Winter Beard - Muskoka

Winter Beard is ready for sharing!

Brewery: Muskoka Brewery
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 8%       IBU: N/A

This delicious Christmas treat pours a very deep brown with a small head of tan foam. The aroma is dominated by strong cranberry tartness with good, sweet chocolate malt notes.

The flavour follows the aroma well although it is significantly less sweet than the aroma suggests. Dominated by tart cranberries over a rich carib body, Winter Beard has a medium to thick body with a smooth, lingering tartness.

“Didn’t taste much as much cranberry as expected.”

Kentucky Bastard | 24 Days of Beer #20

Day 20 - Kentucky Bastard - Nickel Brook

Rich and dark, Kentucky Bastard is begging to be enjoyed… slowly.

Brewery: Nickel Brook Brewing
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 10%        IBU: 70

Kentucky Bastard pours black with a boozy bourbon aroma and finger of dark tan head. The bubbles dissipates to a ring around the edges with light lacing. Hints of caramel, coffee, and butterscotch temper the strong bourbon character releasing a touch of vanilla and roasty malts. The ring of head dissipates slowly throughout drinking, leaving a thin circle.

This imperial stout opens with soft caramel and vanilla before kicking your tastebud’s asses with a powerful, boozy, bourbon bite. Hints of coffee and carib come through, bringing coffee and vanilla notes. The body is tick and smooth with significant carbonation. Kentucky Bastard doesn’t fade away quietly either with a significant vanilla and bourbon lasting aftertaste.

Oatmeal Stout | 24 Days of Beer #19

Day 19 - Oatmeal Stout - St-Ambroise

Oatmeal Stout ready to warm us up on this cold night

Brewery: St-Ambroise
Style: Oatmeal Stout
ABV: 5%        IBU: N/A

This oatmeal stout pours black with a finger of tan head that dissipates slowly. Roasted coffee and chocolate malts dominate the aroma with hints of oats and a touch of vanilla and toffee.

The flavour is mostly strong bitter malts with strong notes of coffee and carib. A strong coffee bite compliments the thick, creamy body, subtle oats, and breadiness. Somewhat aggressively fizzy on the swallow, it has a lasting bitter aftertaste much like a good coffee, but smoother.

The Tom Green Beer| 24 Days of Beer #13

Day 13-Tom Green Milk Stout-Beau's

So dark it fades into my desk, Tom Green is ready for imbibing.

Brewery: Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co.
Style: Milk Stout
ABV: 5%      IBU: 27

Tom Green Milk Stout pours a clear black with a small tan head that dissipates slowly to a thin covering and small ring of bubbles. A malt and creamy aroma is complimented by hints of chocolate and roasted coffee notes with just a touch of vanilla.

With caramel notes up front, the flavour of this stout is a definitely lighter and sweeter than a standard stout. Good malt and coffee flavours provide a nice backbone for the milk chocolate and vanilla notes that make this mild brew unique. The Tom Green Beer has a smooth, thick body with a nice mouthfeel and dry finish.

Imperial Russian Stout | 24 Days of Beer #12

Day 12-Wellington Imperial Russian Stout

This Imperial Russian Stout is rich enough to help you stay warm in the coldest of weather

Brewery: Wellington Brewery
Style: Strong Stout
ABV: 8%      IBU: 42

Wellington Imperial Russian Stout pours black with a short tan head that dissipates quickly. Strong toasted malts and coffee dominate the aroma with hints of chocolate, vanilla, and licorice coming through as well as just a touch of spice.

The flavour opens bitter with strong coffee and malt notes and just a touch of chocolate sweetness. A light spice and strong bitter character follow with more chocolate and licorice notes. Strong carbonation and a lasting spicy bitterness make this stout somewhat prickly despite the thick body
