Belle Epoque Beer Review

Belle Epoque_Belgian IPA_Flying Monkeys

This 10th Anniversary Ale was interesting but not to my taste

Brewery: Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery
Style: Belgian IPA
ABV: 10%        IBU: 72

On one of my few trips to the LCBO recently – I have predominantly been visiting my favourite local breweries for the past few months – I noticed a new boxed brew from Flying Monkeys.

Just in time for their 10th anniversary, Flying Monkeys released this new Imperial Belgian IPA. Hopped with Citra and Glacier hops, it is a unique brew well-suited to celebrating a unique brewery.

Track this one down if you’re curious, I doubt it will be around forever!

Announcement:

Before heading on down to read the rest of this review, please note that the Drunk Kitten will be posting on a reduced schedule for the summer. With so many beer events going on, it’s been difficult to maintain two posts a week (despite drinking a large number of new brews – I am just shy of 500 unique brews on Untappd!) Expect a new beer review each Thursday with sporadic updates about the huge number of beer events you should check out over the next several months.

Thrust! An IPA Beer Review

Thrust An IPA_GLB

Gold Medal Winner at the 2014 Canadian Brewing Awards

Brewery: Great Lakes Brewery
Style: American IPA
ABV: 6.5%         IBU: 72

Leading GLB to a clean sweep of the American IPA category at last year’s Canadian Brewing Awards, Thrust! An IPA is a another Tank Ten success story.

Available at the Great Lakes retail store and select LCBO’s around the city, this American IPA is a beautifully hop forward brew with bright citrus and leafy hop notes.

After spending a lovely afternoon at the GLB Annual Charity BBQ this past weekend drinking possibly more Thrust! than I should have, I figured it was long past time to review it so here we go…

Heelch O’Hops Beer Review

Heelch O Hops_Anderson Valley

This Double IPA is brewed with a heelch of Columbus, Chinook, & Cascade hops

Brewery: Anderson Valley
Style: American Double India Pale Ale
ABV: 8.7%        IBU: 100

Sometimes cat-sitting has its perks. In fact, it has many perks but the relevant one at this point is the image to the left.

This delicious Californian Double IPA is an especially tasty treat left for me by my grateful and very thoughtful neighbours as a thankful for watching their 3 adorable cats.

Extremely well balanced, Heelch O’Hops features not only lovely citrus hop profiles but also plenty of resinous hops and lots of malt. Far from detracting from the flavour, the high levels of Pale Two-Row, Victory malts in this beer give it a solid backbone on which to hang the intense hop characteristics.

Octopus Wants to Fight Beer Review

octopus wants to fight_GLB

A perfect IPA for a sunny afternoon

Brewery: Great Lakes Brewery
Style: IPA
ABV: 6.2%        IBU: 88

Having already tried this beer in a can direct from the brewery when it first launched just a few weeks ago I almost did not order it on tap this afternoon. Luckily there was nothing on that I had not already tried and I know that GLB is always best fresh from the tap. I was not disappointed.

Already a delicious IPA, Octopus Wants to Fight gains an extra level of tasty when served fresh on a sunny spring afternoon in Toronto. Bright and effervescent, it features a lovely mingling of hop flavours.

In any case, I was glad I decided to it as I feel I have much greater appreciation for the beer than I did previously. If you get the chance, drink this one fresh, as Octo says. And this is not to say that it is not worth drinking from a can, it is still a delicious IPA well worth the $2.50/can.

Midtfyns Bryghus Double IPA Beer Review

This tasty double IPA has a strong aroma of apples

This tasty double IPA has a strong aroma of apples

Brewery: Midtfyns Bryghus
Style: Imperial/Double IPA
ABV: 9.2%        IBU: 119

Having good neighbours can be a great thing, especially when they leave you tasty treats for taking care of their (adorable and affectionate) cats.

This particular brew had been on my Untappd wishlist for some time so I was pretty excited to try it out. It was a bit different than I expected from the high IBU rating but, despite the surprisingly fruity aroma, it was quite delicious.

Sharing it with my husband was a good choice as the flavour is quite deceptive, hiding the high alcohol content and making it easy to drink it too quickly.

Twin Pines Beer Review

Twin Pines DIPA_Sawdust City

Mike insisted on being in the picture with this tasty new brew

Brewery: Sawdust City
Style: Imperial IPA
ABV: 8.8%        IBU: 88

A couple of weeks ago I (re)stumbled upon the Sawdust City blog on blogspot and was excited to read all about their Long, Dark Voyage to Uranus Tour and, more specifically, the new brews that they were launching following it.

While there were several interesting collaborations to come out of it, I was most intrigued by their announcement of their 88th beer, the long planned Twin Pines IIPA. Knowing it would not be available immediately, I had almost completely forgotten about it when I went into Indie Alehouse last week for a growler fill. Much to my surprise, they were pouring Twin Pines and I quickly made plans to investigate further the following day.

The next day we stopped by for a drink before dinner and greatly enjoyed our 10 oz of golden deliciousness. Not quite what I was expecting, it was nonetheless well worth the special trip.

Hops & Bolts | 24 Days of Beer: Day 16

Day 16 - Hops & Bolts - Creemore

Our beer festival glasses are the perfect size for sharing a Hops & Bolts

Brewery: Creemore Springs
Style: India Pale Lager
ABV: 5.3%      IBU: 60

Hops & Bolts pours a hazy medium brown with a white head that dissipates quickly to a thin ring around the edge of the glass. The nose is well balanced between citrus, tropical hops and toffee malts with some hints of leafy hops underneath.

The flavour of this India Pale Lager starts out  mild with a touch of toffee sweetness and tame almost noble hop flavours. Soon it morphs into a burst of citrus and tropical hops before fading to a dry, bitter finish with a nice touch of toasted grains. More earthy in flavour than aroma, Hops & Bolts has a light mouthfeel and low-medium carbonation.

HopBot IPA | 24 Days of Beer: Day 10

Day 10_HopBot IPA_Hop City

Clear and bright, HopBot IPA is an inviting brew

Brewery: Hop City Brewing Co.
Style: American IPA
ABV: 7.1%      IBU: 70

This IPA pours a clear golden colour with a small head of foam. The head has some retention, fading to a thin covering of bubbles and some carbonation is evident. Strong, juicy grapefruit and peach dominate the aroma and a hint of tangerine is also evident. Traces of leafy hops round it out for an inviting, intense aroma.

HopBot’s flavour follows its aroma quite well with strong citrus fruits and resiny, leafy hops. Grapefruit, and orange give it a juicy body while the hints of sweet peach balance the high IBUs. A prickly, spicy bitterness dominates the mouthfeel, leaving a lasting sensation of prickly citrus spice.
