Hypnopompa Beer Review

This stylish bottle holds a delicious secret

Brewery: Omnipollo
Style: American Imperial Stout
ABV: 11%       IBU: N/A

While enjoying a delicious dinner at Mugshot Tavern, one of our many local options, I noticed an interesting name at the bottom of the bottles list:

omni pollo hypno pompa

At $15 for a 330mL bottle of 11% imperial stout, we decided to share it and our expectations were understandably high.

And not disappointed.

The one caveat I will add to is that we should have ordered it earlier in the evening so it could sit and warm up a bit. In the end we spent awhile sitting with the brandy snifters between our palms waiting for the beer to  reach the right temperature. It was certainly worth the wait.

Nigerian Prince Beer Review

Nigerian Prince_Indie Alehouse

A heady brew that pours black as night

Brewery: Indie Alehouse
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 10%        IBU: N/A

Filling up our 2015 Growler Club growler for the first time in a few weeks, I had a tough choice: A new saison, a new ESB, and a rich, strong imperial stout.

With a fridge full of Canuck and Pompous Ass, I decided the stout would round out our options best and spent the extra $9 for this over-proof, barrel-aged brew.

I think I made the right choice – this stout was a great pairing with our delicious Indian dinner – but I’ll certainly have to be back again soon to try out the other new options available.

Heelch O’Hops Beer Review

Heelch O Hops_Anderson Valley

This Double IPA is brewed with a heelch of Columbus, Chinook, & Cascade hops

Brewery: Anderson Valley
Style: American Double India Pale Ale
ABV: 8.7%        IBU: 100

Sometimes cat-sitting has its perks. In fact, it has many perks but the relevant one at this point is the image to the left.

This delicious Californian Double IPA is an especially tasty treat left for me by my grateful and very thoughtful neighbours as a thankful for watching their 3 adorable cats.

Extremely well balanced, Heelch O’Hops features not only lovely citrus hop profiles but also plenty of resinous hops and lots of malt. Far from detracting from the flavour, the high levels of Pale Two-Row, Victory malts in this beer give it a solid backbone on which to hang the intense hop characteristics.

Winey Bastard Beer Review

Winey Bastard is a fantastic strong beer for wine lovers

Winey Bastard is a fantastic strong beer for wine lovers

Brewery:  Nickel Brook Brewing
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 9.5%       IBU: 70

Initially I was unsure of this particular imperial stout: The Pinot Noir barrels promised a rather different finish than the Kentucky Bastard’s beautiful bourbon aromas and flavours but the idea intrigued me.

While I do enjoy my occasional glass of red wine, my relationship with the stuff if not always a good one and I tend to reach for a beer over a wine most days. That said, I really like the basis for both of these barrel-aged brews, Nickel Brook’s Bolshevik Bastard, and so I figured it would be worth the experiment to find out just how different the two brews really are. Good thing as this tart imperial stout is highly delicious!

Midtfyns Bryghus Double IPA Beer Review

This tasty double IPA has a strong aroma of apples

This tasty double IPA has a strong aroma of apples

Brewery: Midtfyns Bryghus
Style: Imperial/Double IPA
ABV: 9.2%        IBU: 119

Having good neighbours can be a great thing, especially when they leave you tasty treats for taking care of their (adorable and affectionate) cats.

This particular brew had been on my Untappd wishlist for some time so I was pretty excited to try it out. It was a bit different than I expected from the high IBU rating but, despite the surprisingly fruity aroma, it was quite delicious.

Sharing it with my husband was a good choice as the flavour is quite deceptive, hiding the high alcohol content and making it easy to drink it too quickly.

Sunkicked Anejo Beer Review

Sunkicked Anejo_Indie Alehouse

Aged in tequila barrels; it is a sour, boozy brew

Brewery: Indie Alehouse
Style: Barrel Aged Imperial Wit
ABV: 7%        IBU: <10

While stopping in at the Indie Alehouse last weekend for the much anticipated Twin Pines IIPA, I decided to try this unusual barrel-aged brew. Mike had decided to stop in at the Rod, Gun & Barbers across the road for a quick haircut and I didn’t want to get started on the main event until he joined me.

So I picked out something new to try, something different; and I could not have picked something more different if I tried. Pretty far from my usual choices, this tequila barrel aged imperial wit is sour, boozy, and unlikely to appeal to anyone lacking a taste for tequila.

Twin Pines Beer Review

Twin Pines DIPA_Sawdust City

Mike insisted on being in the picture with this tasty new brew

Brewery: Sawdust City
Style: Imperial IPA
ABV: 8.8%        IBU: 88

A couple of weeks ago I (re)stumbled upon the Sawdust City blog on blogspot and was excited to read all about their Long, Dark Voyage to Uranus Tour and, more specifically, the new brews that they were launching following it.

While there were several interesting collaborations to come out of it, I was most intrigued by their announcement of their 88th beer, the long planned Twin Pines IIPA. Knowing it would not be available immediately, I had almost completely forgotten about it when I went into Indie Alehouse last week for a growler fill. Much to my surprise, they were pouring Twin Pines and I quickly made plans to investigate further the following day.

The next day we stopped by for a drink before dinner and greatly enjoyed our 10 oz of golden deliciousness. Not quite what I was expecting, it was nonetheless well worth the special trip.

Bounty Hunter Beer Review

bounty hunter_bellwoods

Oddly summery for an imperial porter, Bounty Hunter is as delicious as it is dark

Brewery: Bellwoods Brewery
Style: Strong Porter
ABV: 10.3%        IBU: N/A

“AKA “The Cocopo”: This strong porter received a healthy dose of raw coconut and vanilla during fermentation. The result is a maelstrom of bitter chocolate, dark malt flavours, with a subtle coconut/vanilla underbelly.”

Matador v2.0: El Toro Bravo Beer Review

Matador 2 El Toro Bravo - Flying Monkeys

The Matador v2.0, ready for sharing

Brewery: Flying Monkeys
Style: Imperial Dark Rye Beer
ABV: 10.10%         IBU: 33

Complex and smoky, El Toro Bravo is another success for this powerhouse of a brewery.

3 and a halfcat

Known for their unique and full-flavoured experiments, the brewers at Flying Monkeys are certainly not afraid to try something new. While I would hardly claim to be a fan of everything they put out, they are definitely one of the more creative breweries in Ontario.

Winter Beard | 24 Days of Beer #24

Day 24 - Winter Beard - Muskoka

Winter Beard is ready for sharing!

Brewery: Muskoka Brewery
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 8%       IBU: N/A

This delicious Christmas treat pours a very deep brown with a small head of tan foam. The aroma is dominated by strong cranberry tartness with good, sweet chocolate malt notes.

The flavour follows the aroma well although it is significantly less sweet than the aroma suggests. Dominated by tart cranberries over a rich carib body, Winter Beard has a medium to thick body with a smooth, lingering tartness.

4 out of 5 cats

Mike says:

“Didn’t taste much as much cranberry as expected.”
