Craft Beer Passport 2015

In a couple of hours a very exciting event is going down at the Revival Bar: the Craft Beer Passport Launch Party! With a delicious beer list curated by the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies and including beer from six Ontario breweries (Underdogs, Junction, Kensington, Black Oak, Hogtown & GLB) it is sure to be an evening of great beer and good tunes. But even if you can’t make it out tonight, don’t despair because this party is just the beginning.

What is the Craft Beer Passport?

Last year the Craft Beer Passport brought hundreds of craft beer drinkers from around the city out into strange and exciting bars to try a variety of delicious new brews. This year, they return with another fantastic line-up including some returnees and several new establishments.

Simply put, the passport is a package deal that entitles you to extremely cheap ($2) 12 oz beers at 20 bars all around the city. The passport itself costs $20 making each drink only $3, a solid deal. And it gives you a great excuse to get out and see more of this fantastic city we live in (or near). I admit I am pretty bad at leaving my cozy, beer-friendly corner of the city to explore other areas so this passport is just what I need!

Below you will find a map of the 20 bars and restaurants participating in this year’s passport.

Thrust! An IPA Beer Review

Thrust An IPA_GLB

Gold Medal Winner at the 2014 Canadian Brewing Awards

Brewery: Great Lakes Brewery
Style: American IPA
ABV: 6.5%         IBU: 72

Leading GLB to a clean sweep of the American IPA category at last year’s Canadian Brewing Awards, Thrust! An IPA is a another Tank Ten success story.

Available at the Great Lakes retail store and select LCBO’s around the city, this American IPA is a beautifully hop forward brew with bright citrus and leafy hop notes.

After spending a lovely afternoon at the GLB Annual Charity BBQ this past weekend drinking possibly more Thrust! than I should have, I figured it was long past time to review it so here we go…

666 Devil’s Pale Ale Beer Review

The Devil Made Them Brew It...

The Devil Made Them Brew It…

Brewery: Great Lakes Brewery
Style: American Pale Ale
ABV: 6.66%       IBU: 35

First released in 2006 as a seasonal beer, Devil’s Pale Ale was met with such a warm reception that it was soon brought back as a year-round addition to the Great Lakes lineup.

One of my first introductions to the brewery, 666 has been a staple in my fridge for several years and it’s a perfect balance to all the massively citrusy IPAs I tend to drink.

666 Devil’s Pale Ale is best paired with ribs, hot wings, and smoked cheeses.

Octopus Wants to Fight Beer Review

octopus wants to fight_GLB

A perfect IPA for a sunny afternoon

Brewery: Great Lakes Brewery
Style: IPA
ABV: 6.2%        IBU: 88

Having already tried this beer in a can direct from the brewery when it first launched just a few weeks ago I almost did not order it on tap this afternoon. Luckily there was nothing on that I had not already tried and I know that GLB is always best fresh from the tap. I was not disappointed.

Already a delicious IPA, Octopus Wants to Fight gains an extra level of tasty when served fresh on a sunny spring afternoon in Toronto. Bright and effervescent, it features a lovely mingling of hop flavours.

In any case, I was glad I decided to it as I feel I have much greater appreciation for the beer than I did previously. If you get the chance, drink this one fresh, as Octo says. And this is not to say that it is not worth drinking from a can, it is still a delicious IPA well worth the $2.50/can.

My Summer of Beer

Greetings and Salutations! First off, my apologies for the sporadic posting of late, my schedule has been up and down due to starting a new job (yay!). With Great Lakes Brewery. That’s right, I am now going to be working for the Canadian Brewery of the Year for 2013 & 2014 as one of their event staff. I am super excited and really looking forward to a summer of delicious craft beer with many events, festivals, and unique opportunities to try out some unusual brews. (mention SOBDL?)

As the spring and summer play out I will update this blog with upcoming events and festivals and hopefully I will meet some of you there! For now you should know that Great Lakes Brewery is handing out free samples of both Canuck Pale Ale AND Pompous Ass English Pale Ale at The Court Jester Pub (Located at 681 Danforth Ave) from 5:30-8:30pm this Thursday, April 9. I will not be there myself but if you’re in the area it’s well worth it to drop by, enjoy a tasty sample or two, and try something off the pub’s extensive menu.

Harry Porter & The Bourbon Soaked Vanilla Bean Beer Review

Harry Porter and the Bourbon Soaked Vanilla Bean_ GLB

This nondescript bottle holds a delicious secret: a porter packed with vanilla & bourbon

Brewery: Great Lakes Brewery
Style: American Porter
ABV: 6.5%        IBU: 30

This 2015 version of the very well-received Tank Ten creation was released as part of this year’s Project X series. I have been meaning to try this particular iteration of Harry Porter for sometime but, somehow, I keep on missing it.

Thankfully I worked my first tour and tasting at Great Lakes Brewery on Saturday and noticed they just happened to have several bottles waiting for me in the retail store fridges.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, I also picked up several cans of Apocalypse Later, a bottle of another Project X creation The Last Vestiges of Winter, and a growler of the truly incredible Swamp Juice #9, a mix of IPAs including Karma Citra, Robohop, and Canuck Pale Ale.

Harry Porter Beer Review

harry porter - great lakes brewery

Harry Porter in my frosted Pisces glass

Brewery: Great Lakes Brewery
Style: Porter
ABV: 6.5%      IBU: 18

Stemming from our Project X line, Tank Ten is a tickle trunk of tasty treats. This series is payback to our hard working brewers. We’ve reserved fermenting tank number ten for them and have given them the green light to brew whatever the heck they want. Bottoms up!
