Belle Epoque Beer Review

Belle Epoque_Belgian IPA_Flying Monkeys

This 10th Anniversary Ale was interesting but not to my taste

Brewery: Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery
Style: Belgian IPA
ABV: 10%        IBU: 72

On one of my few trips to the LCBO recently – I have predominantly been visiting my favourite local breweries for the past few months – I noticed a new boxed brew from Flying Monkeys.

Just in time for their 10th anniversary, Flying Monkeys released this new Imperial Belgian IPA. Hopped with Citra and Glacier hops, it is a unique brew well-suited to celebrating a unique brewery.

Track this one down if you’re curious, I doubt it will be around forever!

Before heading on down to read the rest of this review, please note that the Drunk Kitten will be posting on a reduced schedule for the summer. With so many beer events going on, it’s been difficult to maintain two posts a week (despite drinking a large number of new brews – I am just shy of 500 unique brews on Untappd!) Expect a new beer review each Thursday with sporadic updates about the huge number of beer events you should check out over the next several months.

Beach, BBQ & Brews Festival

Beach BBQ Brews FestThis weekend, amidst a huge variety of Ontario Craft Beer Week events all across the province, another annual tradition returns to Toronto: The Beach, BBQ, and Brews Festival is held every year on Father’s Day weekend and boasts fun for the whole family! This free event features great BBQ food, a children’s play area with rides, live music, grilling demonstrations, BBQ competitions, and, of course, local craft beer! A community favourite, Great Lakes Brewery is participating again this year and I am looking forward to pouring some beer, enjoying some BBQ, and relishing the lovely June weather we are sure to have all weekend long! If you are looking for something to do, why not bring dad out to a day of delicious grilled food and cold suds? Hope to see you there!

Bevy 0017 Tickets on sale Tomorrow

The party well underway at Rainhard Brewing

If you are a lady who loves good beer and you haven’t done so yet, you should get yourself over to the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies website and sign up for their mailing list. That way you will have advance notice of things like tickets going on sale and new merchandise delivered right to your inbox. If you have never been to a Bevy before, take my word for it: it’s a wholly worthwhile way to spend a Friday night.

With great food provided by a variety of local food trucks and restaurants and fantastic beer from new and old brewers around Ontario, it is a great place to try something new. Even the venues are sometimes new and exciting spots well worth checking out. In fact, just last month at Bevy 0016 we enjoyed some delicious pints from the brand new Rainhard Brewing, right in their junction brewery and event space. The newest addition to the Toronto beer scene, Rainhard is already pumping out a variety of stellar brews and we got to try them before most!

Next month is sure to be another great party in another great albeit secret venue. If the idea of purchasing a ticket for something without knowing where it is gives you pause, do not fret: every venue is located somewhere within the city and is totally TTC accessible even if they are a little off the beaten path. For me, that’s half the fun! Toronto is a huge city with tons of great establishments and it would be hard to see them all without a little help!

If this sounds like something you would enjoy, watch Twitter and/or Facebook tomorrow for the release of tickets for this month’s event. They typically go on sale at 11am on the second Friday of each month and they often sell out fast. Hope to see you there!

Recidivist Beer Review

This highly unique barleywine was a special treat

Brewery: Amsterdam Brewing
Style: Barley Wine
ABV: 10       IBU: N/A

Having seen this barleywine listed for several weeks on the beer menu at the Brewhouse, my husband was quite disappointed to suddenly find that it had sold out in less than a week between his visits. Taking to Twitter to express his disappointment, he was informed that there were a few bottles left, and promised that they would let him know when it was back in stock.

Well, we got the good news last week: not only was it back (in limited supply) but Heather had put aside a special bottle just for us to take home. Thank you, Heather! This delicious, honeyed barleywine was a very special treat I am glad I got the chance to try.

Craft Beer Passport 2015

In a couple of hours a very exciting event is going down at the Revival Bar: the Craft Beer Passport Launch Party! With a delicious beer list curated by the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies and including beer from six Ontario breweries (Underdogs, Junction, Kensington, Black Oak, Hogtown & GLB) it is sure to be an evening of great beer and good tunes. But even if you can’t make it out tonight, don’t despair because this party is just the beginning.

What is the Craft Beer Passport?

Last year the Craft Beer Passport brought hundreds of craft beer drinkers from around the city out into strange and exciting bars to try a variety of delicious new brews. This year, they return with another fantastic line-up including some returnees and several new establishments.

Simply put, the passport is a package deal that entitles you to extremely cheap ($2) 12 oz beers at 20 bars all around the city. The passport itself costs $20 making each drink only $3, a solid deal. And it gives you a great excuse to get out and see more of this fantastic city we live in (or near). I admit I am pretty bad at leaving my cozy, beer-friendly corner of the city to explore other areas so this passport is just what I need!

Below you will find a map of the 20 bars and restaurants participating in this year’s passport.

Hypnopompa Beer Review

This stylish bottle holds a delicious secret

Brewery: Omnipollo
Style: American Imperial Stout
ABV: 11%       IBU: N/A

While enjoying a delicious dinner at Mugshot Tavern, one of our many local options, I noticed an interesting name at the bottom of the bottles list:

omni pollo hypno pompa

At $15 for a 330mL bottle of 11% imperial stout, we decided to share it and our expectations were understandably high.

And not disappointed.

The one caveat I will add to is that we should have ordered it earlier in the evening so it could sit and warm up a bit. In the end we spent awhile sitting with the brandy snifters between our palms waiting for the beer to  reach the right temperature. It was certainly worth the wait.
